Specific Adaptation to Imposed Demand - the S.A.I.D. Principle seems like it would be explained to you by a scientist in a sterile lab. But in reality, it’s a simple, foundational concept that guides everyone from elite trainers to everyday gym-goers.
The S.A.I.D. Principle means your body adapts
specifically to the demands you place on it. In other words: train for what you want to achieve. If your goal is to improve your one-mile time, run a mile frequently at a pace that challenges you but still allows for recovery.
A key aspect of the S.A.I.D Principle is specificity. If your goal is broad or multifaceted, break it into clear, manageable parts. For example, if you want to lose weight, your real aim is to create a calorie deficit. You can do this by slightly increasing your energy expenditure - through workouts and light physical activity like short walks - and slightly reducing your calorie intake by improving your food choices and reducing your portion sizes.
Or suppose your ultimate goal is to run a marathon, but you’re not running at all yet. Start at square one: a half-mile walk/jog is a perfect place to begin. Increase the distance gradually, letting your body adapt step by step. You’d be amazed how far consistency can take you.
If you have a goal but aren’t sure how to break it into simpler parts or where to start, our personal trainers are here to help. We’re here to either design a plan that sets you on the right path or stick with you every step of the way!
