Obesity in the United States

It has been two decades since federal health officials said the United States was experiencing a "growing obesity epidemic” that was putting millions of lives at risk. The situation has grown significantly worse since 2000.

At the turn of the century, approximately 30.5% of American adults were obese. The US adult obesity rate is now 42.4% surpassing 40% for the first time on record in 2018. Therefore the adult obesity rate has increased by 26 percent since 2008 according to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES).

Obesity leads to an increased risk of health issues such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, some forms of cancer, and end-stage renal failure. Now, obese individuals have an additional concern to factor in: Covid-19. Obese people with Covid-19 are at a significantly higher risk of hospitalization and/or death.

One reason is that carrying excess fat can limit the lungs ability to expand and breathe. Another reason is chronic inflammation that is associated with obesity. Inflammation is a natural way our bodies fight off harmful intruders such as viruses. However, long-lasting inflammation can undermine your body’s defense when a real threat arises such as Covid-19.
