How to Choose the Group Exercise Class That's Right for You

Group exercise has come a long way since the eighties, and with so many options available today, it can feel overwhelming - especially if you're new to group exercise. Finding the right class is a lot like finding a new hobby: it should be something you enjoy and feel confident doing. Our goal is to help you discover classes you'll love and look forward to each week.

As a Houstonian Club Member, you have access to over 200 group classes per week. We encourage you to start by asking yourself a few key questions:

  1. What are your goals? Are you looking to change your body composition, build strength or endurance, improve flexibility, boost coordination through dance, sharpen your balance, strengthen your cardiorespiratory fitness, or reduce stress through mind-body practices?
  2. What does your schedule look like? Which days and times work best for you? For beginners, 2–3 days per week is a great starting point. The American Council on Exercise recommends that beginners aim for 150 minutes of exercise per week.
  3. When did you last feel your best and what were you doing? Think back to a time when you felt strong and energized. Was there a specific activity involved? For example, if you have a background in dance or cheer, you might love our Pilates/dance classes. Former runners may enjoy our Blitz class, while those who played team sports or did drills might thrive in our Bootcamp or H.I.I.T. classes.
  4. What are your concerns about joining a group class? It's completely normal to feel nervous. Most of our classes have a core group of regulars who create a welcoming, familiar atmosphere. Once we learn a bit more about your background and preferences, we can point you toward the instructor and class format that will suit you best.
